Working visit to Luxembourg by His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates
On 22 May 2026, His Highness Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, paid a working visit to Luxembourg.
The Emirati minister was received by His Royal Highness the Grand Duke, as well as by the Prime Minister, Luc Frieden.
He held talks with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel.
The two ministers discussed the situation in the Middle East. Minister Bettel emphasised the need to maintain the ceasefire in Iran and Lebanon, both of which are extremely fragile. He reaffirmed the need to move towards a lasting political solution, guaranteeing peace and stability in the region.
Minister Bettel reiterated Luxembourg’s condemnation of the Iranian attacks against Gulf countries, including those targeting the United Arab Emirates. These acts constitute a flagrant violation of international law and the sovereignty of states. In particular, he condemned the recent drone attacks on 17 May against the Barakah nuclear power plant.
He reiterated his commitment to de-escalation and a diplomatic solution to resolve tensions in the region. This is essential to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions and address the risks associated with its military programmes and destabilising activities.
The Minister also called for the immediate and unrestricted reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the closure of which continues to have serious economic, political and humanitarian consequences.
He expressed his gratitude to his counterpart for the excellent cooperation in the evacuation of Luxembourgish and European citizens from the United Arab Emirates.
The two ministers also discussed bilateral relations and explored ways of strengthening them, particularly in the financial, economic and innovation sectors.
For the past 15 years, Luxembourg has had an embassy in Abu Dhabi, which remains its sole diplomatic representation in the region.
As part of the visit, a bilateral treaty on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters was signed by the Minister for Justice, Elisabeth Margue, and Her Excellency Lana Nusseibeh, Minister of State of the United Arab Emirates.
