Published Wednesday July 01 2015

Today marks the first day of the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union which the country will keep until December 2015. This will be the 12th time Luxembourg will be at the helm of the European Union.

The citizen has been put at the center of the work over the coming 6 months. The Luxembourg Presidency has opted for an open approach to listen to citizens, support businesses and cooperate with partners and institutions to act in the European interest.

The priorities of the Luxembourg Presidency for the second semester of 2015 are based on seven pillars:

  • Stimulating investment to boost growth and  employment
  • Deepening the European Union's social dimension
  • Managing migration, combining freedom, justice  and security
  • Revitalising the single market by focusing on its  digital dimension
  • Placing European competitiveness in a global and transparent framework
  • Promoting sustainable development
  • Strengthening the European Union's presence on the global stage

The Presidency presents a logistical challenge: no fewer than 237 meetings are to be held between July and December 2015, including 21 ministerial meetings. Merely in the month of September, 67 meetings will be held in Luxembourg! In total around 27.000 participants and close to 6900 delegations are expected across 37 sites located throughout the country. Moreover there will be an increased virtual presence.

As part of the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the virtual knowledge center on Europe ( CVCE ) in Luxembourg initiated the CVCE Europa Quiz . Interested parties will have the opportunity to participate in the contest. Each day, they will be asked a question on a topic related to Europe with unique prizes awarded.

Luxembourgers and people from around the world will be able to take part in this exciting Presidency either online or by planning a trip to the Grand Duchy!
